Price Increase for Object Storage

Our S3-compatible object storage has proven very popular – often used in combination with cloud servers, but sometimes simply as external storage for a setup that you host locally, for example. cloudscale relies on "all flash" technology for its object storage as well, which translates into reliable performance for our users. However, SSDs have become very expensive in recent months, which is why we are adjusting the price per gigabyte of used storage in our object storage effective 2027-01-01.

Tight hardware market

In July already, SSDs cost about five times as much as they had just a few months earlier, and this trend has not changed since then. For cloudscale, this market development (which, incidentally, is not limited to SSDs) means that our costs per GB rise with every capacity expansion. For this reason, effective January 2027, we are adjusting the price per gigabyte used – that is, one of the three pricing components – for our object storage.

Price adjustment for object storage

Effective 2027-01-01, we will charge CHF 0.002 (instead of the previous CHF 0.001) per GB per day for used storage space. In addition to these storage costs, there will still be a component for network traffic and one for API requests – these remain unchanged at CHF 0.02 per GB of outbound traffic and CHF 0.005 per 1'000 requests, respectively, and inbound traffic remains free as before. How much more expensive the object storage will ultimately be for you depends, in significant part, on your usage patterns.

Even with the new, higher price, our object storage would not be economically viable if we were to build it from scratch in today's market environment. Because we can build on existing hardware and only had to procure a portion of the capacity under the current terms, we are able to keep the current price increase moderate – and, of course, we will strive to continue offering you an attractive solution even as the market evolves in the future.

Calculates wisely,
Your cloudscale team
